EMPOWERING YOUNG BOYS THROUGH HAIRSTYLE CHOICES

January 15, 2022

As the new school year fast approaches it is time to get the boys into Barber Industries Maitland for a fresh looking back to school hairstyle. Or is it? As parents, we want what is best for our children and through this endeavour we too often assume that our control of their choices is necessary. Today we outline why it can be good for young boys to make their own hairstyle choices and why giving this control of identity is empowering for them.

Life Skills

Developing a sense of self through their own hairstyle choices is a way of forming independence, empowerment and autonomy in children. Style choices that are independent of their parents can teach ownership of body and having this awareness provides a valuable set of tools to carry with them as they get older. Through ownership of self and the knowledge that it is not okay for others to make decisions for them they can garner the skills necessary to articulate what is and is not okay in more difficult situations.

Freedom Of Choice

Relinquishing parental oversight and providing young boys with the ability to make their own decisions begins with the question of going to the barbershop for a haircut or not. Just because it is a new school year does not mean that they need a short back and sides, the freedom of choice starts with having the haircut or not.

Trust

The independence of these decisions helps to facilitate a sense of trust between the two of you. You are messaging that you trust in their decisions and the reciprocation of this is a greater level of trust in return. They know you have their best interests at heart and are more likely to adopt your advice when it is not forced upon them.

Self Expression

This environment of support instead of control encourages your child to be themselves without fear. It encourages them to express themselves and shows that you will love them no matter what. It allows them to make mistakes and to learn from the choices they’ve made. Choosing their own haircut might seem like a small thing however it’s a small choice that provides a big lesson in autonomy, consent, and trust.
