UNDERSTANDING STYLING POWDERS, POMADES, PASTES AND SPRAYS

July 21, 2022

We are in a day and age where there has been somewhat of an explosion of brands into the men’s grooming space. Instead of this being a good thing, it has led to a market over saturated with inferior products. To add to the confusion of it all the word ‘pomade’ is seemingly used to refer to any men’s hair product that comes in a tin. So with that said, it’s best to do some due diligence and get an understanding of what’s what and what’s good in the styling space for your hair.

Range of styling products available at the barbershop

Powders

A more recent development in the styling space has been the formulation of texturising powders. These are great for messy styles and for creating volume and texture in a hairstyle. The highlight attribute would have to be ease of use, simply dust on and then shape up the style. We recommend Uppercut Deluxe Styling Powder and Slick Gorilla Hair Styling Powder.

Pomades

It’s hard not to be confused when the term pomade is so loosely used and at the core of it, pomades can be anywhere from high shine to low shine and high hold to low hold. The composition also varies with either petroleum or water based pomades available. Be sure to read the packaging carefully or better still, simply shop her at Barber Industries Stockland Greenhills where you’ll get all the right advice and only the best barbershop only products.

Pastes

The products in this basket of tins are thicker than pomades, usually offer a matte finish, and generally offer both firm hold and texture. They are often water based for easy wash out but sometimes include waxes and emollients for added definition. Pastes are commonly used in styles where the hair is longer than a couple of inches. Check out Filthy Muk Styling Paste or American Crew Defining Paste.

Sprays

Two things to touch on here and the first one being sea salt or grooming sprays. These are a great way to add texture to longer locks and are great for curly and wavy hair. They are great at taming frizz and fly away hairs and can be used as a preparation before firmer products. The second is hairspray, yeah, the final touch to help set your look. We recommend Layrite Deluxe Grooming Spray and 1821 Man Made Hair Spray.
