October 22, 2022
When it comes to men’s hair styling products there is none more widely known than pomade. The stuff has been around for centuries and has changed a great deal over the years. In today’s article we are going to take a good look at this men’s hair grooming essential and lay out a guide on how to use pomade as part of your hair styling regime.

What is pomade?

The name pomade comes from the French word for ointment and this is exactly what pomade was before it was adopted as a hair styling aid. Originally animal fats were the main ingredient and this was replaced by the likes of petroleum, lanolin and beeswax. Today there are many water based pomades and they have the benefit of washing out easily and not building up like oil based pomades do.

One of the most confusing things about pomades is that the term is too loosely used to describe mens hair styling aids.

The market is quite frankly overwhelmed and many manufacturers refer to absolutely everything as a pomade. This leads to a state of bewilderment as there are so many products being misrepresented.

How to use pomade?

Generally speaking, pomades are used to create well formed men’s hairstyles like pompadours, slick backs, comb overs and hard parts. For these hairstyles a pomade with firm to strong hold and a decent sheen work best. Here at the barbershop we would typically use Uppercut Deluxe Pomade or Layrite Superhold Pomade to create these types of hairstyles.

To style, start by blowdrying the hair into position and build up some volume and height with a quiff roller. Using a small amount of pomade, rub the product between the palms of the hands to warm it up. Run the hands and fingers through the hair to coat and distribute evenly. Use a comb to neaten up and refine the style.
