With more and more boys choosing to express themselves with alternative hairstyles. There has been an increase in schools outlawing certain hairstyles and adopting quite a firm stance on these type of haircuts in their policies. One of the most notable events is the banning of the mullet, that’s right the old Aussie Icon has been banned from some schools, what has the country come to? Other common rules include; hair not to be cut too short, hair not to be grown too long and hair lengths not to transition to abruptly. These type of policies remove the youths ability to express themselves through personal style and greatly reduce their freedom of choice. The schools tend to argue from the position that it teaches discipline however we find that to be very conservative thinking for today’s zeitgeist. For boys attending such schools and whom wish to stay out of trouble with the dean of students, best to stick to the classical scissor cut, comb over, crew cut, ivy league or pompadour.

Modern

Luckily, most of our schools here in the Hunter are quite progressive in their attitude towards boys hairstyles and that greatly opens up the options. Allowing hair lengths to be at the extremes of long or short allows for an an array of modern hairstyling options. The skin fade is a very popular choice and it involves razor blade short lengths. This technique compliments and enhances many modern hairstyles. Some popular styles that are good for the schoolyard are a high fade crop top, low fade with a hard part or a mid fade quiff. Many of the modern versions of the mullet hairstyle involve a also involve a skin fade and this is proving to be one of the most popular trends with boys of all ages.

Rebel

At the other end of the spectrum we start moving into the likes of mohawks, undercuts, ponytails and razored patterns. These are the styles for the young fellas who a ready to make a statement and say “i’m not afraid to stand out in the crowd.” After all, at some point parents need to relinquish their control and allow the boys to make decisions for themselves. Their choices may not always be optimal however with every decision comes greater responsibility, autonomy and ownership of self. All very important steps along the learning journey.
